RefExh (sold as the “Duet Burn System” in Japan) was developed by S&S Engineering Co., Ltd. a company established by the prominent Japanese automotive engineer Shinichiro Sakurai.

Prior to the time that PM and NOx was considered as separate components, air pollutants released from the diesel engines of vehicles could not be reduced simultaneously. However, after a four-year effort beginning with the commencement of the development project in August 2002, S&S Engineering successfully developed the world’s first technology to simultaneously reduce PM and NOx. In September 2003, the technology became the first technology to be officially certified for compliance with PM / NOx Law in Japan.
